One of the true blessings of January in Montgomery, Alabama are the blossoms of the sturdy, reliable Japonica Camelias in our gardens. Visitors to Montgomery Botanical Gardens in Oak Park particularly benefit from the presence of several large Camellias that were installed long before the botanical gardens began and, with proper care, now continue to thrive and bloom each year during the long grey days of winter.
Since planting began in Montgomery Botanical Gardens in 2017, additional Camellias have been installed of both Japonica and Sasanqua groups. The Sasanquas provided a lovely show of pale and median pink flowers for all to enjoy in the fall then subsequently their petals fell providing the impression of pink snow beneath each shrub. Now the Japonicas are stepping up to fill the winter gap. With the span of milder weather we are currently experiencing, it is a great time for us to stroll through the gardens and observe, photograph, sketch or paint the variety of Camellia blossoms that grace the pathways and the drive.
A visit to the gardens can also lift your spirits as you see the many early signs that Spring is really just around the corner. Tiny yellow blossoms of Forsythia are beginning to peek out on their long, graceful branchers. Some of the bulbs are pushing up through the soil seeking the warm sunshine. The Japanese Magnolia is barely holding on to its many buds wanting to burst into bloom.
Many volunteers have and do work tirelessly to provide this special place for residents and visitors alike. So, plan an excursion to your Montgomery Botanical Gardens in historic Oak Park and take the time to observe and enjoy this beautiful oasis of nature in an urban environment that is here for everyone.
