The July class offered by the Montgomery Botanical Gardens at Oak Park will be Building Birdhouses and Feeding Birds. The class, to be taught by Master Gardener Billie Crawford, will be held at the Wisdom Wood Outdoor Classroom on Saturday, July 13, at 9 AM.
Ms. Crawford has left her gardening imprint throughout the city of Montgomery in her work at the Montgomery Shakespeare Festival, working with Karen Weber, who oversees the grounds. She is an eager participant at Montgomery’s
urban farm, Eat South, where she prepares their raised beds for spring and summer plantings.
One of Ms. Crawford’s favorite projects is Lilly’s Garden at Forest Avenue Elementary School, which she co-chairs with Ann Oldham. Due to neglect caused by school closure due to COVID-19, she single-handedly re-ordered the large school garden area, and she helped to replace the raised beds in Lilly’s Garden before students returned to school.
Ms. Crawford was honored last year by MACOA for transforming a neglected area outside their building into a lovely, intimate garden for seniors to enjoy while eating lunch, visiting, or seeking quiet time.
The class will feature a demonstration of how to make a birdhouse, as well as tips on how to feed garden birds. Participants should note that, due to the heat, it will be offered at 9:00 AM.
Seating is available, but participants may wish to bring folding chairs. Water will be available. Because of the summer heat, there will be no August class. The September offering will be Pottery in the Garden, Saturday, September 14 at 10:00 AM, taught by Margaret Barber.
