Sasanqua Camellias blooming

Even with the seasonal rains, winds and dropping temperatures of late fall and early winter, natures beauty shines through in the Montgomery Botanical Gardens. Everyone in the river region can enjoy the timely changes throughout the gardens with a stroll along the garden pathways.

The fallen leaves of the Ginkgo trees form golden carpets on the ground beneath. The brilliant red of the Maple trees shine in the canopy above. Even the bare limbs of other majestic old trees provide a beauty of their own. The numerous Sasanqua Camellias continue to contribute their array of pink blossoms ranging from pale “baby” pink to deep, almost red pinks as their season begins to fade.

The two newly placed large urns at the entrance to the gardens enhance and mark that area with added significance. The lion sculptures in the terrace are “dressed” for the season with Magnolia wreaths and large red bows. They make a popular backdrop for family photos and especially for Christmas cards.

Whether you stroll slowly through the gardens to observe the flora and experience this beautiful oasis of nature, or walk the gardens pathways pushing your children’s strollers, or tread with focus for your regular exercise, or jog the pathways for a more intense exercise experience, be sure to stop and take in all that the gardens offer you. Listen to the numerous birds, the rustle of wind through the leaves, and the chatter of squirrels. Recognize and appreciate all the beauty of nature in the gardens that our Master Gardener volunteers have created for you. In this season of joy and wonder, know how blessed we are to have in this urban area such a gem of nature for all of us to experience and enjoy.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Botanical Gardens at Oak Park.

  1. The Botanical Garden is amazing. Every where you look is something beautiful. I’m honored to be a part of helping develop the beauty in the garden.
