The major function that distinguishes a botanical garden from other types of gardens is that botanical gardens display Plant Identification Signs to inform and education visitor. MBG has from its beginning provided many signs to identify plants throughout the gardens and on those that are sponsored by donors acknowledge the respective donors.

Crinum Lily

Many new Plant Identification Signs were recently installed in the Southern Garden area of the Montgomery Botanical Gardens.   Visitors can now learn the names of many more plants in the gardens and observe the environmental characteristics of the area is which they are planted. They can observe plants on subsequent visits to determine how each plant develops and its appearance throughout the growing season. Being so informed, they may then know what plants to purchase that they like for their own gardens from their local garden centers. Or they may simply be able to identify plants that are already in their own landscape or garden. Some Plant ID signs in MBG will be replaced or moved as designs for planting beds are updated/changed over time.

Gold Mound Lantana

With more Plant ID signs in the gardens, visitors can observe as perennial plants go through their dormant cycle and resprout the following growing season. As Plant ID Signs remain in place in the dormant season, they will aid visitors in learning when each plant emerges and how it begins to grow. Learning more about plants encourages people to create or improve their own gardens. MBG is dedicated to informing the public about plants and encouraging their interest in learning to select, install and maintain plants in their own gardens and lawns, thus enhancing our urban areas and improving the environment for everyone.
