Sunny, mild weather greeted those who attended the demonstration class at Montgomery Botanical Gardens on “Creating Holiday Arrangements with Ferns” on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Mrs. Anna Owen, Master Gardener and creative floral designer, demonstrated a variety of ways to include ferns and other natural items in lovely arrangements for the coming holidays. This was the final class of 2024 in the gardens as it completed the 2024 MBG Calendar of Classes.
Mrs. Owen chose a rustic, metal cornucopia into which she placed many colorful gourds and finished it by adding small feathery ferns to create a centerpiece suitable for a Thanksgiving table. She chose a tall, white glass vase to demonstrate how to attach oasis at the top and use it to drape vines, Fatsia and ferns downward and add colorful flowers and berries at the top angled upward.
For another creation she used a piece of driftwood to which she attached ferns, holly with berries, pine cones, dried lichen and nandina to produce a beautiful, natural arrangement for a table or a buffet. She also selected a Christmas tree shaped form and arranged greenery around the bottom to show the class that anything can be enhanced with items from nature and used to decorate your table for the holidays.
The lucky people who attended the class were impressed and delighted with the numerous natural items and materials that Mrs. Owen was able to use and applauded the unique floral arrangements she produced using containers that were a mixture of forms, sizes and shapes.
The 2025 MBG Calendar of Classes will be published and distributed in December. So, watch for it and be prepared when the first class is scheduled in 2025.
